The Perfect 3-Day Fall Getaway Near Mackinaw City

The Perfect 3-Day Fall Getaway Near Mackinaw City
There’s a point every fall in Northern Michigan when everything seems to slow down a little.
The mornings get cooler. The roads get quieter. The trees start showing off. And throwing a sweatshirt in a bag and heading Up North for a few days suddenly sounds like a very good idea.
If you have three days, the Mackinaw City area gives you just enough time to experience some of the best parts of fall in Northern Michigan without trying to fit everything into one trip.
You can spend a day exploring Mackinac Island, another outside among the fall colors, wander through Mackinaw City and still leave room for slow mornings and evenings by the lake.
Here’s how we’d spend three fall days near Mackinaw City.
Day One: Mackinaw City + An Easy Evening on Paradise Lake
The first rule of a three-day getaway?
Don’t turn arrival day into a race.
Once you get Up North, give yourself a little time to settle in before trying to see everything.
If Paradise Lake is your home base, unpack, stretch your legs and take a walk down to the water. Then head into Mackinaw City for the afternoon.
Spend a Few Hours Exploring Mackinaw City
Fall brings a different pace to Mackinaw City.
There are fewer summer crowds, cooler temperatures for walking and, depending on when you visit, fall color beginning to surround the Straits.
Walk downtown. Browse a few shops. Get the fudge- you are this close to Mackinac Island, after all. Then make your way toward the waterfront for a look at the Mackinac Bridge.
If you're visiting during October, you'll also find the annual Scarecrow Stroll throughout downtown Mackinaw City.
And don't worry about seeing everything today. You'll be back this way tomorrow.
Come Back to Paradise Lake Before Dark
After dinner, head back toward Paradise Lake.
This is where I would deliberately leave the itinerary blank.
Fall sunsets arrive earlier than they do during our long summer days, so take advantage of it. Sit outside for a while. Walk down to the lake. Have a bonfire. Let the kids play if they're along for the weekend.
Sometimes the best part of coming Up North is finally realizing there isn't anywhere else you need to be.
Day Two: A Fall Day on Mackinac Island
Today is the bigger adventure.
If you've only experienced Mackinac Island during the height of summer, fall gives you a chance to see a completely different side of it.
The air is cooler, the leaves are changing and the pace begins to settle as the island approaches the end of its main visitor season.
Catch a Morning Ferry From Mackinaw City
Head into Mackinaw City and catch a morning ferry so you have plenty of time on the island.
One important fall-travel note: ferry schedules change as the season winds down, so always check the current schedule before your trip rather than relying on summer departure times.
Check current Mackinac Island ferry and seasonal information
Once you step off the ferry, resist the urge to turn the day into a checklist.
Walk downtown. Rent bikes if the weather is good. Take a carriage tour. Find somewhere for lunch. Wander into Mackinac Island State Park.
And yes, buy some fudge.
Leave Time to Wander
Some of the best parts of Mackinac Island happen when you leave the main downtown area behind.
With no personal vehicles on the island, walking, biking and horse-drawn transportation are part of the experience.
Head toward the island's interior and you'll find wooded roads and trails that are especially beautiful once the leaves begin changing.
You don't have to see every landmark.
Follow a road you've never taken. Stop when you find a view you like. Sit somewhere longer than necessary.
That's a perfectly acceptable fall itinerary around here.
Head Back Across the Straits
By late afternoon, catch the ferry back to Mackinaw City and return to Paradise Lake.
After a full day of walking and exploring, having somewhere quiet to come back to feels especially good.
Kick your shoes off.
Sit by the water.
Have a fire if the weather cooperates.
Tomorrow is slower.
Day Three: Fall Colors + Wilderness State Park
Don't rush out the door on your last morning.
Have your coffee first.
Take one more walk down to Paradise Lake. Sit outside for a bit. Let everyone move at vacation speed.
Then, when you're ready, head toward one of our favorite places to explore near Mackinaw City.
Spend the Morning at Wilderness State Park
About 11 miles west of Mackinaw City, Wilderness State Park covers more than 10,000 acres and includes roughly 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, along with miles of trails through hardwood and conifer forest.
And in fall?
This place is beautiful.
You can hike beneath changing trees and end up looking out over Lake Michigan all without needing to turn the morning into a major expedition.
Choose a trail based on how much time you have before heading home, or simply explore the shoreline.
If you're driving into a Michigan state park, remember that a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.

Take the Long Way Home
And then comes one of our favorite fall activities:
Take the long way.
If you see a road lined with color, take it.
Stop at the roadside stand.
Pull over for the view.
Grab lunch somewhere you hadn't planned.
Three days Up North don't have to end the second you check out.
Have Another Evening? Go See the Stars
If you're staying a third night, there's one more place worth adding.
Headlands International Dark Sky Park sits along Lake Michigan just outside Mackinaw City and protects more than 600 acres of forest and shoreline from light pollution.
It's open 24 hours a day, and fall is a pretty wonderful time to visit.
You'll want warm layers, but unlike June and July, you won't have to wait until nearly midnight for a truly dark sky.
Plan a visit to Headlands International Dark Sky Park
Bring a blanket.
Give your eyes time to adjust.
And look up.
Not a bad way to end a Northern Michigan weekend.
What to Pack for a Fall Getaway Near Mackinaw City
Fall weather Up North has a personality of its own.
A sunny afternoon can turn into a chilly evening pretty quickly, especially near the water, so layers are your friend.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a warm sweatshirt or fleece, a jacket, rain protection and a hat and gloves for colder mornings and evenings. If Mackinac Island is part of your weekend, plan for plenty of time outside and more walking than you might expect.
And bring the extra sweatshirt.
You'll probably use it.
Want to Add an Apple Orchard or Pumpkin Patch?
If you're visiting earlier in the fall, you can easily swap part of this itinerary for an orchard, pumpkin patch or other seasonal stop.

Where to Stay for a Fall Getaway Near Mackinaw City
One of the nice things about visiting Mackinaw City is that you don't necessarily have to stay right downtown to enjoy it.
In fact, we think there's something pretty special about doing the opposite.
Spend your days exploring Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, Wilderness State Park and Northern Michigan, and then come back somewhere a little quieter.
Lakeside Heritage Resort sits on Paradise Lake in Carp Lake, just a short drive from Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge.
We're a small, family-friendly lakeside resort and an easy home base for exploring this part of Northern Michigan.
But when you come back at the end of the day, the adventure doesn't have to continue.
There are chairs by the lake.
Bonfires.
Room to be outside.
And a pretty good excuse to do absolutely nothing for a while.
Because the best part of a Northern Michigan getaway isn't always what you did.
Sometimes it's the coffee by the lake before you left.
The road you took because the trees looked pretty.
The extra hour you spent around the fire.
Or realizing somewhere around day three that you haven't been in much of a hurry at all.
Explore Northern Michigan with Paradise Lake as your home base.
